Gamma Knife and Cyber Knife Radiosurgery are neurosurgical techniques
for treating brain diseases with highly focused radiation beams.
They are bloodless. They are highly effective for brain tumors,
both malignant and benign, arteriovenous malformations, and trigeminal
neuralgia (sharp face pains). Radiosurgery can often be used in
place of standard surgery and radiation. Patients are discharged
the day of surgery.
After your treatment plan has been finalized, you will be taken
into the Radiosurgery treatment room and transferred onto the treatment
couch. You will not hear or feel the treatment. During this time
you will remain in constant contact with the medical personnel
via the use of an intercom system. Your treatment is observed at
all times through television monitors. Although rare, there are
some long term risks after Radiosurgery, depending on the particular
problem. If any of the following occur, contact your physician
immediately!
- Seizure
- New onset of numbness
- Weakness
- Loss of balance
- Visual disturbance
- Severe headache
